Sara McMann Talks Strikeforce, Ronda Rousey and More!

Strikeforce’s women’s division keeps growing. Strikeforce has announced that undefeated fighter and Olympic silver medalist Sara McMann has signed with the promotion.

Debuting in 2011, McMann is currently 6-0 in mixed martial arts. Her most recent fight ended with a unanimous decision win over Shayna Baszler at Invicta FC 2. This fight was an eliminator bout to see who would fight for the Invicta FC Bantamweight championship.

McMann joins Cat Zingano in departing Invicta for bigger checks and higher visibility at Strikeforce. Strikeforce may clean out Invicta’s 135 pound division and luckily Invicta still has other weight divisions. With McMann going to Strikeforce, this sets up a natural match of former Olympians: McMann vs. Rousey.

Both McMann and Ronda Rousey are Olympic medalists, McMann a silver medalist in Women’s Freestyle Wrestling in the 2004 games in Athens, while Rousey, who is also the current Strikeforce Women’s Bantamweight champion, is a bronze medalist in Women’s Judo in the 70 kg class in the 2008 Beijing games. Both women also have 6-0 pro records, though Rousey was also 3-0 as an amateur.

McMann’s wrestling should neutralize Rousey’s ground game while others believe Rousey’s submission skills and ability to finish a fight would overwhelm McMann. Think again, McMann has never been overwhelmed in her life.

Along with Rousey, there are others for McMann to look forward to including former Strikeforce Women’s Bantamweight champion Miesha Tate. Another could be Canadian fighter Alexis Davis, who is coming off of a second-round submission victory over Hitomi Akano, who McMann also defeated back at Pro Elite 3 in January.

There is speculation that McMann could make her Strikeforce debut at the Nov. 6 event that will be headlined by the UFC-Strikeforce crossover bout between Daniel Cormier and Frank Mir. However, no opponent has been named at this time. Listen to this great interview by the Official Radio Partner of PDG, Takedown Wrestling Media. Enjoy!
