Will Next-Gen Xbox Force Always-Online on Gamers?
Earlier this week, Microsoft Studios creative director Adam Orth had some choice comments for gamers concerned that the new Xbox console will require an always-on Internet connection. Here is what he said on his Twitter account – “sorry, I don’t get the drama around having an ‘always on’ console. Every device now is ‘always on’. That’s the world we live in. #dealwithit”. Well Microsoft head honchos didn’t like Adam’s tweet, issuing the following statement…
We apologize for the inappropriate comments made by an employee on Twitter yesterday. This person is not a spokesperson for Microsoft, and his personal views do not reflect the customer centric approach we take to our products or how we would communicate directly with our loyal consumers. We are very sorry if this offended anyone, however we have not made any announcements about our product roadmap, and have no further comment on this matter.

Aliens: Colonial Marines for Wii U Officially Canceled
Most gamers who played Aliens: Colonial Marines on consoles came away with a bad taste in their mouths as the game was thought to have been a giant bomb. Well maybe SEGA heard the criticism and decided they had wasted enough money on the project as Demiurge CEO and co-founder Albert Reed had this to say about the Wii U version that was supposed to launch last month – “We were very sorry to hear about the cancellation of Aliens for Wii U. It’s business-as-usual here at Demiurge Studios. We are focused on making Shoot Many Robots for mobile kick ass and we’ve got another unannounced game in the works that we can’t wait to unveil!”
Atari founder Nolan Bushnell Talks Xbox 720 and the PlayStation 4
In a GameTrailers’ Rollin’ With Nolan episode, video game entrepreneur and founder of Atari, Nolan Bushnell seems to think the Xbox 720 will be the better console. Here is a portion of what Nolan had to say – “I personally believe Microsoft is in a superior position, and the reason is Sony, whenever they change consoles, the software tools that they have are lame, a lot of times in the past they were in Japanese; not well documented and getting the software development community up to speed…they may have been able to do it in Japan, but the American software community just says ‘Oh boy, what a pain.’ And a lot of people don’t realize how strong the software community is at making the hardware platform sing and dance.” He continued to state his case with – “Microsoft, because of their strong software tools, will end up with much better products sooner [and] easier, in my estimation,” Bushnell said. “And with that, I think will be an advantage. And also don’t forget, Microsoft actually has so much money to defend this. Plus, they have a good infrastructure with the [Xbox Live Arcade], with their online world.”

LucasArts Closed Down
According to several reports this week, Disney has shut down computer game developer LucasArts. According to a representative from LucasFilm, the cancellation of Star Wars 1313 is not absolute – “It is worth noting that we are looking for proven external partners who can help us provide video games to our fans. We still believe in the video game industry, we still will provide Star Wars games, we’re just looking at different models rather than internal production… They’re evaluating everything. There’s always a possibility that it [Star Wars 1313] can still come out via licensing, it’s super sad. It’s a terrible day. I want to make sure everyone realizes that there still will be Star Wars games out there.” In addition to the questions surrounding Star Wars 1313, over 150 employees have lost their jobs.
Deadpool Gets His First Casualties
The upcoming Deadpool game has yet to be released although it is nearly finished, so Activision laid off about 40 of the developers at High Moon Studios. The highly anticipated title will hit shelves this summer and here is what Activision had to say in regards to the layoffs – “Activision Publishing consistently works to align its costs with its revenues–this is an ongoing process, with the completion of development on Deadpool, we are taking a reduction in staff at High Moon Studios to better align our development talent against our slate. Approximately, 40 full-time employees will be impacted globally. We are offering those employees who are impacted outplacement counseling services.”
