The 1972 Summit Series
Known at the time as the “Canada–USSR Series,” it was eight intense, hard-fought ice hockey games between Canada and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics during September of 1972.
The Soviets had a history of dominating international hockey competition — the same competitions that disallowed professional Canadians to play in.
The reason for this series was to have a genuine “Best vs Best” competition, to see who reigned supreme in the ice hockey world. International pride was on the line and fans on both sides were tuning in. Keep in mind that this series was played during the Cold War, at a time of intense feelings of national pride.
